Poles Gajuo GAJO was born on 4 September 1974 in Ninive, Iraq. He is a specialist of the Syriac Catholic musical traditions, and well introduced into the Maronite tradition. He studied at the University of Mosul, Iraq, where he obtained his Degree in Mathematics and Computer Programming in 1998, and at the University of the Holy Spirit - Kaslik, Jounieh (Beirut), Lebanon, where he obtained his Canonical Degree in Theology in 2008. He studied music in the National Institute of Music in Lebanon from 2006 to 2012. He also studied at the University of Notre-Dame of Louaiza, Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon, where he obtained his Degree in Art and in Arabic Musicology in 2015. He obtained his Master’s Degree in Ethnomusicology at the Haute Ecole de Musique of Geneva, Switzerland, in November 2023. He is planned to continue his musical researches on Syriac music in the context of a PhD.
His aim is to identify the sources of Syriac music, as well as to capture current practice, with the view to transmit the tradition to the next generations. Poles Gajuo was a member of the Syriac Catholic Ephremite Monastic Order from 2000 ro 2017. Since 2009, he started trying to spread the Syriac heritage in a new way, with several articles published on the Syriac Catholic Patriarchate website (www.syr-cath.org/syrpages/index/7). His is a specialist of the Syriac Catholic musical liturgy (according to the "Tekrit" tradition, now known as Mosul tradition, and the "Quaraquosh" tradition (Eastern Syriac Catholic tradition, Iraq), and according to the tradition of Charfet (Western Syriac Catholic tradition, Lebanon and Syria). He conducted several studies on this liturgy and the related melodies, in order to identify their sources and original practices, to correct possible errors introduced through the centuries, and proposing ways to make them evolve. He started a transcription into modern notes of the oral tradition of Iraq. In September 2016, he was assigned by His Beatitude, the Syriac Catholic Patriach Youssef III Yunan, the Project of recording and transcription of the Syriac Catholic Eastern tradition, and as coordinator of the related Sacred Music Working Group established in Iraq, with the task to conduct a transcription of the Mosul, Quaraquosh and Bartella sub-traditions, supported by the Laus Plena Foundation, Lugano, Switzerland. In a second step, Poles Gajuo could also review, in the context of a second Project, the transcriptions made for the Western Syriac Catholic tradition.
Poles Gajuo is the President of the Syriac Catholic Musical Commission in Mosul (Iraq), founded in 2013. He is a member of the Syriac Catholic Musical Commission in Lebanon. He has been for many years the Director of the Syriac Catholic Patriarchal Choir of Beirut. He coordinated and edited the recordings of several CDs and DVDs, among which: "Saints Behnam and Sera (August 2012), "The Resurrection of Christ" (June 2013), "The Fire of Christmas" (December 2016), “Great Friday Celebrations” (2017).
Poles Gajuo speaks Arabic, Aramaic, Syriac, English and French. He professionally masters several music and voice programs, like Finale, Cubase, Sound Forge, and general computer programmes.
